The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan came into existence in 1946 and is bordered by Syria, Iraq, Saudi-Arabia and Israel and the Palestine Occupied Territories. It has a southern port in Aqaba. Officially Jordan is a secular state with a constitution in which freedom of religion and equality of colour and race are guaranteed. The official language is Arabic but the English language is spoken by many.
Jordan has an embassy in The Hague, where visas can be obtained. One can also obtain a visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport.

Politics and Economy
Jordan is a constitutional monarchy, in which the King appoints the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister appoints the Cabinet after consulting the King. There are regular elections for the Lower House. The judiciary consists of 14 Courts of Magistrates, 7 Courts of First Instance, 1 Court of Appeal and 1 Supreme Court.
During the last couple of years Jordan has carried out extensive economic reforms. Jordan is a member of the WTO (2000), has a Free Trade Agreement with the USA (2000) and an Association Agreement with the EU (2001).
Jordan has, next to minerals, few natural resources. A large part of the population is working in the service sector and manufacturing. The largest export items are phosphates, potash, fertilisers, chemicals and pharmaceutical products.
